Voltz, 56, was based in Roanoke for more than four years and later kept close ties with the company's marketing department in Roanoke.
Originally from Chicago, Voltz worked in the railroad industry for 31 years, beginning with the Wabash Railroad Co. in 1962. He joined Norfolk and Western Railway Co. two years later when the Roanoke railroad acquired Wabash, and held several sales positions in the Midwest.
When NW merged with Southern Railway Co. in 1982 to create Norfolk Southern, Voltz became regional sales manager. Several promotions later, in 1990, he was named vice president of merchandise marketing.
Voltz attended St. Joseph's College, the University of Virginia Executive Program and the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Elizabeth Voltz; son, Thomas Voltz, and a granddaughter. His family in Chicago includes his mother, Sue Voltz, and brothers Robert and Paul Voltz.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at King's Grant Presbyterian Church, 745 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Burial will be private.
