Jarvis (6-5) held Salem to five singles and was helped by the Spirits getting 21 runners on base and having rallies in almost every inning.
Winston-Salem (3-1) scored twice in the third inning on RBI singles by Motorboat Jones and Tim Belk. In the fourth, Eric Owens' sacrifice fly scored Chad Mottola, who reached on a leadoff walk, and made it 3-0.
Dave Dorneweerd (2-8), tagged with his sixth consecutive loss, was pulled in the fifth inning after giving up a leadoff single. Winston-Salem got a run on a wild pitch by reliever Kevin Rychel and Mike Harrison doubled in another in the fifth. Jones singled in a run in the sixth, and Bubba Smith and Mottola hit RBI singles in the eighth to finish the scoring.
Winston-Salem's Glenn Sutko (2-2, 4.02 ERA) goes against Salem's Doug Harrah (4-0, 2.53) tonight in the second game of the four-game series in Winston-Salem.
