CLINTON PICKS NURSE TO BE U.S. AIDS CZAR

After months of criticism from AIDS groups, President Clinton has selected the former health director of Washington state as the country's AIDS czar, sources in the administration said Thursday.

Kristine Gebbie, a registered nurse, is not as well known as candidates who previously turned down the job of President Clinton's head AIDS adviser. The long and very public effort to find someone to fill the position had become something of an embarrassment to the White House.

The president is expected to announce the appointment today.

Leaders in the fight against AIDS expressed relief that the search was over, and some praised Gebbie, who was also a member of a presidential AIDS commission that issued a report highly critical of President Ronald Reagan's handling of the epidemic.
