ROANOKE WOMAN WINS FITNESS AWARD IN NATIONAL PAGEANT

Roanoke native Kelley S. Orr, the Virginia representative at the America's Junior Miss Pageant in Mobile, Ala., won a preliminary award on the opening night of the pageant Thursday.

Orr won a $500 scholarship for fitness. All contestants performed a jump-rope routine to the music of the Pointer Sisters' "Jump." Judges rated the performances of Orr and Georgia's Rebecca Jones best, according to Becky Cook, a contest volunteer.

Orr, who recently graduated from William Fleming High School, was selected in March from 21 contestants statewide to represent Virginia in the national contest. At school, she was a class officer and a member of the Beta Club, Spanish Honor Society and the Superintendent's Advisory Committee.

She plans to attend Roanoke College to major in communications and international studies.

Orr was one of five contestants who won preliminary awards. The contest continues today and Saturday. More than $80,000 in scholarship money is at stake. Orr is the daughter of Thomas L. and Carol Orr.
