TRUCKER SERIOUSLY HURT IN I-81 ACCIDENT

Roger Lightfoot, a truck driver from Tennessee, was in critical condition Thursday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after his vehicle crashed in the median of Interstate 81 in Botetourt County, state police said.

Lightfoot was southbound about 4:15 a.m. Thursday in the left lane near mile marker 158 when a flatbed truck in the right lane lost a wheel, according to Sgt. L.B. Jarvis.

Lightfoot's rig struck the wheel and went through the guard rail into the median strip. Another driver struck the wheel but managed to maintain control.

Nobody else was injured, police said.

Jarvis said one lane of southbound traffic was closed while Lightfoot's truck was removed from the highway.
