FOR THE RECORD
A story in Thursday's Extra section incorrectly described some aspects of
Christiansburg artist Jeht Matous' upbringing. Matous says she raised as a Jew
who was taught to maintain an openness with Christians and Muslims. Her
grandfather's family settled in the Southeast Georgia coastal area where he
was a tzaddik, a socio-religious leader. Matous also is descended maternally
from Jews who moved from Yemen and Morroco across the Sudan and West Africa.
She is writing a book on the Afro-asiatic diaspora and her family's background
in it.
