CAMP MEETING GETS UNDER WAY JULY 9

The 15th annual Robert Sheffey Memorial Campmeeting will get under way July 9 and continue through July 17 at the Robert Sheffey Memorial Campground near Wesley's Chapel in Trigg.

The Rev. James O. Dorriety will be the guest evangelist and the Rev. Charles Dennis will be the music director for the nine-day event.

In addition to nightly services, there will be workshops and Bible study, singing, and other activities.

Several gospel groups and choirs also will perform.

The camp meeting is named for Robert Sayers Sheffey, a circuit-riding, 19th-century pioneer preacher who ministered to settlers of Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas and parts of Tennessee and Kentucky.

Sheffey is buried in the Wesley's Chapel cemetery, next to the camp meeting site.

\ JACKIE BYRD will join the staff of Blacksburg Baptist Church as an associate pastor.

A Gilbert Linkous Elementary School teacher for the last 16 years, Byrd will become the associate pastor for children and their parents on Aug. 15.

Byrd is a graduate of Radford University.

She's also pursued graduate studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and at Virginia Tech.

She and her husband, Dr. Roland Byrd, have four grown children and one grandson.

The congregation of BLACKSBURG CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) will celebrate the church's 90th anniversary starting with the morning service Sunday at 10:45.

The Rev. Anna Jarvis Rhea of Winston-Salem, N.C., will speak. Rhea once served the Blacksburg congregation as well as the Newport Christian Church in Giles County.

A reception will follow the service.

The original congregation of eight women, seven men and three children came together in 1903. In the fall of that year, they paid $800 for the former Baptist church at Roanoke and Church streets.

A new church later was built on the same foundation. It now houses the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center.

The Disciples moved to their present location at Toms Creek Road and Watson Avenue in 1969.

On the calendar of events:

Christiansburg's Main Street Baptist Church youth choir will present the musical "The Extra Mile," tonight at 7 at the Christiansburg High School Auditorium.

Admission is free, and there will be a nursery.

The Senior Choir of First Baptist Church, Elliston, will have its pre-anniversary service Sunday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Wyms and the Willing Workers from Radford as guests.

Students of Eckankar will sponsor a three-part guided discussion series starting Wednesday, 7:30-9 p.m. at Blacksburg Public Library.

The other sessions will be July 13 and Aug. 3.

Discussion topics will include "What is a spiritual experience?" and "What is Eckankar?"

David Kithcart will be the guest speaker at the Antioch Alive Outreach Ministers' Conference Friday through July 4 at Antioch Alive, 2401 S. Main St., Blacksburg, next to Ken's Music.

Services will be held Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., and July 4 at 10 a.m.

There's a big VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL with many churches in the New River Valley offering programs:

The Presbyterian Church of Radford, Grace Episcopal Church, Christ Lutheran Church and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church will jointly sponsor vacation church school sessions.

Classes for preschool through junior high students and for adults start Sunday at 5 p.m. and continue Monday and Tuesday, 6-8 p.m., and Wednesday, 6-8:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Radford, Fourth and Randolph streets.

\ SUMMER SCHEDULES in effect at a number of churches in the New River Valley:

Grace Episcopal Church, 210 Fourth St., Radford, holds Sunday services at 8 and 10 a.m. through August.

Luther Memorial Lutheran Church at the corner of Prices Fork and Toms Creek roads holds have services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. each Sunday, with a nursery at each service, through Aug. 15.

The Presbyterian Church of Radford at the corner of Fourth and Randolph streets has a church-school fellowship gathering each Sunday at 9 a.m.

Church school follows at 9:15 a.m., and worship is at 10 a.m. through Aug. 29.

First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski has worship at 10 a.m. through Aug. 29.

At the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church at Church and Eakin streets, morning worship begins at 10, with fellowship and refreshments following the service.

St. Jude Roman Catholic Church at 7318 Peppers Ferry Road in Fairlawn celebrates Mass each Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and on Sundays at 10 a.m.

Christiansburg Presbyterian Church at 107 W. Main St. holds morning worship services at 8:45 and 10:55, with Sunday school at 9:45.

The First Church of God at 650 Canaan Road in Christiansburg will offer two morning worship services starting July 4.

Services will be at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. through Aug. 29.

To kick off the church's new schedule, the Singing Sammons Family will sing during both services and present a concert during the Sunday school hour on July 4.

Facilities are completely accessible to those with disabilities.

\ SHAWSVILLE CONGREGATIONAL HOLINESS CHURCH, Alleghany Spring Road, has Sunday School at 10 a.m. and worship services at 11. The church also has Sunday and Wednesday evening services at 7.

\ THE REV. RICHARD E. BETHUNE will retire Wednesday after a decade of service at First Presbyterian Church.

After a trip, Bethune, 62, and his wife, Virginia, will move to Blacksburg this summer.

A retirement reception for the Bethunes will be held Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church at Fourth and Jefferson streets.

After three years as organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church in Pulaski LAVELVA STEVENS will join the staff of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville on Thursday.

Stevens also has been a music director at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg.

\ ANGELA AREHART of Pulaski has been licensed to the Gospel ministry at Pulaski Church of the Brethren.

She currently is serving Hiwassee Church of the Brethren as minister of nurture and visitation.

A graduate of Pulaski County High School, Arehart is studying at the Christian Growth Institute in Roanoke. This is a program that prepares Brethren laity for church leadership.

\ MARLENE MCGRATH , campus minister at Virginia Tech's Newman Community for Roman Catholic students, faculty and staff for seven years, will be moving to Richmond, where she plans to assist new mothers in "a form of hands-on ministry."

McGrath, a resident of Blacksburg for 17 years, helped start several innovative programs for the Newman Community, primarily working with the 150 university-associated families that live in town the year-round.
