The Indians held a huge lead going into the spring sports season and then won state championships in soccer and girls' track while making the semifinals in boys' tennis.
Blacksburg scored 295 points in winning its third Cup, the most points ever by a school in any division. This is the fourth year of the award, sponsored by Central Fidelity Bank and the Virginia High School League.
Blacksburg also won in 1990 and shared the Cup with Tabb in 1991. Tabb had 225 points this year. Blacksburg tallied 137.50 points in the spring, while Tabb had 87.50.
Salem, which won a boys' state tennis championship, also scored points in boys' track and softball to finish with 197.50 points for third place.
In Group A, Strasburg finished ahead of Powell Valley and Stuarts Draft. The Glenvar Highlanders, whose 132.50 points were the highest for any school in state spring sports' competition, was the highest finishing Timesland school and took a fourth-place tie with Sussex Central. George Wythe, which tied for a girls' state track title, tied for sixth with Franklin.
Cave Spring finished 28th and was the top Timesland Group AAA school. Frank Cox High School of Virginia Beach, was the Group AAA winner.
\ HALL OF FAME: The VHSL announced 10 people who will be inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in October at Charlottesville.
The only Timesland honoree is Marion's Charles Ensor Harkins. He coached boys' basketball for six years at Appalachia and 17 at Marion, compiling a 294-176 record.
Courtland football coach Ken Brown, whose teams have played various Timesland schools recently in state playoffs, is also set to enter the Hall of Fame. In 32 years, his teams have a 228-97-10 record.
