IRVAN OUTRUNS GN FIELD

Ernie Irvan dusted a strong field of NASCAR cars Friday at Watkins Glen International Speedway as he won the pole for today's Fay's 150 Busch Grand National Series race.

Irvan, driving a Chevrolet, turned the 2.45-mile road course at an average speed of 114.632 mph, the fastest of 43 cars that attempted to qualify on Friday. The event is the only road course race of the year for the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.

"We've done pretty well on road courses lately," said Irvan, of Modesto, Calif. "I don't claim to be a road racer, because I don't really know what I'm doing. I just attack the course, drive the wheels off of the car, and go for it."

Irvan, who won last year's Fay's 150 and also won the NASCAR Winston Cup race held at Watkins Glen in 1991, beat fellow Winston Cup driver Bill Elliott for the pole. Elliott, driving a Ford, was clocked at 113.820 mph, followed by Ward Burton at 112.698 mph in a Chevrolet.

Joe Nemechek was fourth at 112.499 in a Chevrolet and 1991 Fay's 150 winner Terry Labonte was fifth at 112.155 in a Chevrolet. Rounding out the top 10 were Mike McLaughlin, Phil Parsons, Hermie Sadler, Tracy Leslie and Brett Bodine.

Thirty-eight cars will start the 150-mile, 62-lap race.
