NEWSPAPER INTERN JAILED BY DETROIT TRIAL JUDGE

A Detroit newspaper reporter will spend next week in jail and on display in Recorder's Court, wearing prison garb during the Malice Green beating trials as punishment for contacting a juror in the much-publicized murder case.

Recorders' Court Judge George Crockett III found Santiago Esparza, 23, a reporting intern at the Detroit News, guilty Friday of contempt for calling the juror.

Lawyers and national media experts said that while Esparza clearly disobeyed Crockett's written order forbidding contact with jurors, the punishment was unprecedented, in particular Crockett's order that Esparza sit in court each day in drab green jail shirt and pants.
