HOCKEY

Billy Smith realized a dream when he was one of four players named to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

"I was beginning to wonder if I was good enough to make it," the former New York Islanders goaltender said after being named along with Steve Shutt, Guy Lapointe and Edgar Laprade. "This caps my career. What more can you do? I'm up there with the Bobby Orrs and the Bobby Hulls."

Smith, who retired after the 1989 season, is one of 10 NHL goaltenders with 300 victories. He had a 305-233-105 record in 680 games.

Lapointe and Shutt were part of the Montreal Canadiens teams of the 1970s that ruled the NHL. Lapointe, a defenseman, played on six Stanley Cup winners in Montreal and Shutt, a left wing, on five. Laprade, a center for the New York Rangers from 1945-55, had 108 goals and 172 assists in 501 games.
