Archie Williams, a black runner whose gold medal performance at the 1936 Olympics helped foil Hitler's hopes of using the games to showcase Aryan athletes, died of a heart attack at his Fairfax home on Thursday. He was 78. Williams won the 400-meter race in 46.5 seconds at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. \

Pat Summitt signed a five-year contract as head women's basketball coach at Tennessee. It will pay her $110,000 a year in base salary, which is $10,000 a year more than men's coach Wade Houston's base pay.
