MATH CENTER GETS $2.75 MILLION RESEARCH GRANT

The Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics at Virginia Tech has been awarded a University Research Initiative grant of $2.75 million.

The grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research establishes a center for optimal design and control at Tech and provides funding for four years.

The center features an interdisciplinary research team with core participants at Tech and N.C. State University.

The University Research Initiative is a Department of Defense program to support basic research at U.S. academic institutions. Usually, about 10 percent of the proposals are funded.

Tech's research project is devoted to the development of the new and advanced applied mathematics needed to design, control and optimize aerospace systems such as deformable wings and wind tunnel test facilities.

John A. Burns, director of the new Tech center, will work on the project with Eugene M. Cliff, professor of aerospace and ocean engineering, and Max D. Gunzburger, professor of mathematics.
