Jeff Conger singled to start the rally for Salem, which trailed 5-0 entering the fifth against the Southern Division leaders.
Winston-Salem pitcher Glenn Sutko walked Angelo Encarnacion, coaxed a groundout by Tony Womack and struck out Marcus Ponder before third baseman Ken Bonifay launched a three-run homer to right on a 2-2 pitch to make it 5-3.
Jon Farrell, who finished 3-for-4, followed with an infield single. Mike Brown then doubled down the right field line and Farrell scored when the ball rolled past Spirits right fielder Chad Mattola. Brown advanced to third on the error and scored on a Sutko wild pitch that made it 5-5. Sutko struck out Joe Ronca to end the inning.
The Bucs (2-3) took a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning with the help of another Mattola error. Bonifay, who had three RBI on the night, reached base on a two-out single. Farrell singled to right and Bonifay scored when Mattola's shoelaces got caught in his spikes and he tripped and dropped the ball. Farrell stayed on first but was caught stealing to end the inning.
The Spirits (4-1) squashed the Bucs' hopes in the seventh when they staged a rally of their own. Salem's Sean Evans relieved Dennis Konuszewski and immediately walked Motorboat Jones and gave up a single to Tim Belk. Bubba Smith scored Jones and sent Belk to third on a double to right field.
Mattola then got redemption by doubling in Belk and Smith to take an 8-6 lead. Mateo Ozuna hit a two-out single that scored Mattola and provided the final margin.
Rene Quinones (2-0) earned the victory for Winston-Salem. He struck out three in three innings. Evans (1-2) took the loss for Salem.
Mariano De los Santos (7-4, 3.89 ERA) takes the mound for the Bucs tonight in the third game of the four-game series against the Spirits' Dave Tuttle (2-0, 4.97). \
