DO'S AND DON'TS FOR THE GOVERNMENT

YOUR columnist, Ed Shamy, in his statement "Taxpayers funding the `Keep-`em-Busy' initiative," made very clear the mess that has been created with "Mom and Dad - both at work, or one doesn't live at home anymore."

The task and the responsibility of rearing and caring for children belong to the parents, not the government. Children need the attention of their parents, both of them, from their birth all through childhood, including the teen years. They need parents providing food, shelter and nurture, as well as constant guidance and vigilance.

What the government can do is watch over and secure citizens' opportunities to pursue the inalienable right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, and not allow industry to leave our country to prosper from others' poverty. HELEN CRESS FINCASTLE
