MEREDITH STROHM and EDWARD HARRIS have been named to the corporate advisory council helping the newly formed Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Authority.
Strohm is the provost of the College of Global Studies at Radford University and was a staff adviser on international trade to former Gov. Gerald Baliles. A Roanoke resident, Harris is president of Crestar Bank's western region.
The authority, which begins operating July 1, was created by Virginia's General Assembly to promote economic development in Alleghany County and Clifton Forge. Its members will be appointed by the governor and the two local governments involved.
To assist the authority, state Sen. Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo, R-Fincastle, who sponsored the legislation creating the authority, has recruited educators and business leaders for the advisory council.
The two new advisers will join Marshall University President Wade Gilley, former Rep. Jim Olin, and Westvaco Corp. senior vice president Jack Hammond.
BANKING
\ LINDA L. CORY has been promoted to manager of the NationsBank banking center in Troutville. An employee since 1980, she has worked as a consumer banker at Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke County, at Vinton and in Louisa County.
CHARITIES
\ KIM BURGESS of Blacksburg has been appointed director of accounting for the Roanoke Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. She previously was employed as a certified public accountant with Gordon Winbery, an accountant in Blacksburg.
CONTRACTING
\ MATSON L. ROBERTS has joined Landis & Gyr Powers, a building management system contractor, in Roanoke as a senior sales engineer. He will oversee new construction building controls and retrofit energy management systems. He formerly worked with Southern Air.
HOTELS
\ ARLENE R. POWERS has been named sales manager for the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel. She will coordinate hotel services for group businesses as well as social events. She formerly worked as convention sales manager with the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau and assistant vice president of marketing and public relations at Signet Bank.
MANUFACTURING
\ BILL McPAUL of Roanoke has been named vice president and division manufacturing manager for Lees Carpets, a division of Burlington Industries. He previously worked as group manufacturing manager for the division. He succeeds NEIL YEARGIN, who has been appointed vice president and division manufacturing manager for Burlington Denim.
\ HIAWATHA NICELY JR. has been promoted to executive vice president at Magnox Inc. in Pulaski. He is responsible for the operations and administration of the company and currently serves on the board of directors for Magnox and its six subsidiaries.
In other promotions at Magnox, MATTHEW OLSEN was named operations manager in manufacturing; THOMAS PRICE has been appointed manager of innovation and experimentation in research and development; DAVID MOORE has been promoted to purchasing manager in manufacturing; and RICHARD PEVE has been named operations supervisor in manufacturing.
INSURANCE
\ CLYDE BENNETT GEORGE, local representative in the Roanoke district office of American General Life and Accident Insurance Co., has retired from the firm following a 30-year career. He began his career in 1962 as an agent in the Lynchburg district office. He was promoted to sales manager at the Johnson City, Tenn., office in 1966 and returned to an agency position in Lynchburg in 1968. He later transferred in that position to the Roanoke district.

\ RICHARD A. GARBEE, an officer and shareholder with the certified public accounting firm Salyer, Garbee & Co. in Salem, has been elected president of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community has named ALICE CARBERRY WALKER\ assistant director of nursing, MARY ELIZABETH RAUCH food services director and NANCY M. JAMES bookkeeper.
A graduate of Maryview Hospital school of nursing in Portsmouth, Walker brings more than 30 years of experience to her position.
Rauch has a background in dining services management and nutritional planning and formerly worked as manager of the Miller & Rhodes Tea Room in Roanoke.
A graduate of Radford University, James has taught courses in accounting and computer literacy at various schools in the Roanoke Valley.
