Burress, 39, publisher of The Gazette in Galax, will add the Bedford Bulletin to his responsibilities as part of a restructuring by Landmark for new business growth.
Burress, a 1977 graduate of Virginia Tech, was the first editor of the New River Current when it was established in 1988.
He spent nearly 13 years as a reporter and editor for the Roanoke Times & World-News, beginning in 1977.
He was named to head the Galax newspaper in October 1989.
The Roanoke, Galax and Bedford newspapers are properties of the Norfolk-based Landmark Communications Inc.
Burress' promotion was announced by Larry R. Coffey, division president of Landmark Community Newspapers, based in Shelbyville, Ky.
