ALLEN CALLS FOR CLOSING LORTON PRISON

Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee George Allen said 25 escapes at the Lorton prison in four years prove the complex is a threat to Northern Virginia residents.

The prison in southern Fairfax County is operated by the District of Columbia, which ships prisoners 20 miles from the city to be housed there. It has been a frequent target of Northern Virginia politicians.

"Failing to close this prison almost guarantees that there will be new victims in the community surrounding Lorton," Allen said during a news conference at the prison. "It is clear the only way to make this community safe is to close this prison."

He was joined Friday by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Fairfax County, who has proposed relocating the prison complex by 2010.
