The plane crashed just before 3 p.m. at Concord Airport while participating in the Concord International Air Festival.
Police and fire officials wouldn't confirm whether the people aboard the plane were killed.
A program listed the participants in the act as Ron and Karen Shelly of Midland, Va. Karen Shelly wasn't on the wing when the plane crashed.
Police had no details of the crash, but witnesses said the plane had just come out of a roll at about 100 feet when something went wrong, and the plane went into another roll and crashed.
Air show announcer Frank Kingston Smith said he was so accustomed to seeing the Shellys do the stunt that he had turned away and didn't see the crash.
"I've seen them do it at least 150 times," Smith said.
An airline pilot in the crowd said it appeared the second roll was unintentional.
