Heading the list is 33-year-old defending champion Allen Barber, who will be playing over his home James River Country Club course.
Also back is Keith Decker, the 33-year-old Martinsville furniture company executive who lost to Barber in last year's title match and who won the Amateur in 1991 and 1988.
The other former winners are 50-year-old Vinny Giles of Richmond, who has won a record seven championships, and Tom McKnight of Galax, a three-time winner.
Hank Klein of Richmond won in 1990, and the three other former champions are old-timers - Wayne Jackson, 1965 and 1956; Ned Baber, 1960; and Connie Sellers, 1951.
The field of 104 golfers will play 36 holes Wednesday and Thursday with the low 32 qualifying for match play beginning Friday.
There will be two rounds of match play each Friday and Saturday with the 36-hole title match set for Sunday.

Scott Griffin of Troutville fell just short as Verona's Chip Glover won the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship on Saturday in Lynchburg.
Glover, the 1992 junior amateur champion, took the 1-up victory when Griffin bogeyed the 15th and 16th holes at Boonsboro Country Club. The golfers halved 17 and 18.
Roanoke Post 3 North erupted for 10 runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Patrick County 18-9 in an American Legion baseball game in Stuart.
Kevin Saunders belted two home runs, and Chris Carr, Doug Mundy, Ben Taylor and Donnie Meador also homered for Post 3 North (5-0). Taylor and Al Holland had three hits apiece.
Patrick County (1-8) got a three-run homer from Josh Creggar.
