SIGMON WINS FCS FEATURE

It wasn't necessarily who ran the fastest Saturday night. It was who ran the latest.

A 55-minute rain delay before the race began, and a series of caution flags that thinned the field only prolonged the inevitable.

Rick Sigmon won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the Roanoke Times & World-News 300 at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night. The victory was his fifth of the season and expanded his lead in the points race.

A wide assortment of mishaps left just four vehicles on the track at the end. Harvey Harrison, last week's winner was runner-up, two seconds behind, and Kenny Wagner placed third. Two-time winner Dudley Lawhorn finished fourth.

Sigmon passed pole-sitter Chrissy Oliver on lap 30 when her right front tire went flat and he was never seriously challenged again. Nearly everyone behind him encountered trouble.

Oliver, Harrison and Tracy Owen all qualified in 14.25 seconds, the fastest time of the night. Sigmon started fourth.

Gorden Wingfield won his sixth race of the year in the Rookie competition. Jimmy Wilson, sixth in points, finished second. Steve Hurley was third.

In the Mini Stock division, Steve Lynch also notched victory No. 6 of the season, taking over the points lead from Tommy Dean.

John Hall led the first 18 laps, and placed second. James Cox was third.

Steve Lam, making his first appearance at FCS in more than a month, challenged for the lead until he ran over some debris on the track and got a flat tire. He finished ninth.

Dean, who qualified on the pole, had mechanical difficulties on the opening lap and finished 12th.

Just before his Late Model race, Kenny Wagner pasted the field in the Street Stock contest. Wagner has run only four of the 12 races this year and has won all of them. He is in 10th place in points.

Leon Dalton placed a season-best second, and Mike Dudley was third. Points leader Phillip VanDerVeer hit the wall on turn 3 of the first lap, but returned late in the race and finished eighth.
