BUCCANEERS RIP SPIRITS IN SHUTOUT

Mariano De los Santos limited Winston-Salem to three hits Saturday night to lead the Salem Buccaneers to a 7-0 victory in Carolina League baseball.

De los Santos struck out six and walked four in picking up his eighth victory of the season. He entered the game with a 3.89 earned run average and appeared to be in trouble in the second inning when Bubba Smith stroked a two-out single to left. Walks to Chad Mottola and Greg Hammond loaded the bases.

The Salem pitcher then induced Mateo Ozuna to ground out to third and the Spirits didn't threaten again until the ninth inning.

The Buccaneers staked De los Santos to an early lead when Tony Womack led off the game with a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch from Winston-Salem starter Dave Tuttle. Jon Farrell singled to drive in Womack for a 1-0 lead.

Salem pounced on Tuttle in the second inning when Trace Ragland led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Marcus Hanel. Consecutive singles by Jeff Conger and Kevin Polcovich scored Ragland, and Womack made it 3-0 with an infield grounder. Joe Ronca plated Polcovich with a single and the Buccaneers had a comfortable lead.
