9TH-INNING HOMER SINKS BUCS

Bubba Smith homered on a 2-1 pitch with two out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Winston-Salem Spirits an 8-6 Carolina League victory over the Salem Buccaneers on Sunday night.

The Bucs, trailing 6-3 entering the eighth, had rallied for two runs and then tied it in the top of the ninth.

In the eighth, second baseman Kevin Polcovich walked Ken Bonifay singled and John Farrell's bunt single scored Polcovich. Michael Brown, who had a two-run homer earlier, singled to score Bonifay and cut it to 6-5.

In the ninth, Tony Womack reached on an error by third baseman Bobby Perna, who let the ball go through his legs. Catcher Greg Hammond had him picked off at first, but Womack broke for second and went to third when first baseman Tim Belk threw the ball away at second. Pinch-hitter Joe Ronca chopped the ball over Perna's head to score Womack and tie it 6-6. Salem loaded the bases with two out, but Marty Neff, who finished 0-5 with three strikeouts, grounded out.

The Spirits finished it off with two out in the bottom of ninth, when Salem reliever Mark Mesewicz walked Belk before Smith put the ball over the right-center field fence.

The Spirits won the series 3-1. \
