WILDER'S BIG SHOW GOES . . . BLANK

Gov. Douglas Wilder wanted his Senate candidacy announcement to go off with a bang on national cable television Sunday morning.

But instead it went . . . blank.

Wilder showed up on an interview show, "Lead Story" on Black Entertainment Television, which was taped Thursday but shown for the first time at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. An interviewer, about 10 minutes into the 30-minute show, broached the subject of Wilder's possible candidacy.

Wilder began describing how he was the man to replace incumbent Democrat Charles Robb when the telecast went blank for more than 10 minutes.

Cable viewers ended up missing the bulk of Wilder's discussion.

The cause of the problem wasn't clear. A Cox Cable spokeswoman in Norfolk acknowledged the transmission glitch but said they didn't know whether it was a national or local problem. A call to Cox Cable Roanoke on Sunday was not returned.

No one answered phones Sunday at Black Entertainment Television in Washington, D.C. Wilder's spokesman, Glenn Davidson, was in Honduras with the governor for a trade mission.

The show was repeated Sunday at 11:30 p.m. - without interruption.
