OBIT CHITWOOD, HOWARD

CHITWOOD, Howard, 89, of Hillsville, died Sunday, June 27, 1993, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born September 15, 1903, in Carroll County, son of the late Giles Hambrick and Ella Blankenship Chitwood. He operated grocery stores and farmed in Carroll County, and was part owner and operator of Skyview Drive-In Theater in Marion. He is survived by his wife, Lanora Q. Chitwood, Hillsville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Frieda and Collin Surratt, and Ethel Marie Branscome of Hillsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Howard Carson and Jane A. Chitwood, Bristol, Va.; six grandchildren, Richard A. Surratt, Friendsville, Tenn., Gregory H. Surratt, Forest, Ray A. Chitwood, Gladewater, Texas, Joe H. Chitwood, Blountville, Tenn., Dennis R. Branscome, Sterling, and Gina Branscome Gazaway, Charleston, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, April D. Surratt, Forest, Daniel N. and Nathan A. Branscome, Sterling; three stepsons and two daughters-in-law, Marion G. and Pat Quesinberry, Roanoke, Jimmie L. and Sarah Quesinberry and Gary M. Quesinberry, Hillsville; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Linda Kaye and Jerry R. Martin, Denver, Colo.; ten stepgrandchildren, Karen Q. Poe, Hillsville, Robin M. Quesinberry, Knoxville, Tenn., Craig O. Quesinberry, Roanoke, Anthony L. Quesinberry, Hillsville, Terry W. Quesinberry, Durham, N.C., Ashli A. and Neal B. Quesinberry, Blacksburg, Eric S., Melissa J. and Tiffany R. Martin, Denver, Colo.; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Kristin A. Poe, Lindsey M. Poe, Hillsville, and Kelsey A. Quesinberry, Roanoke; three brothers, Conrad Chitwood, and Dr. James L. Chitwood, Pulaski, Edmond (Ned) Chitwood, Hillsville; two sisters, Mrs. Harless E. (Mary) Taylor, Lynchburg, and Mrs. Wayne Dale (Viola) Edwards, Stow, Ohio. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 29, 1993, 11 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with the Rev. Levi Humphreys officiating. Interment will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens, Galax. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
