PAMPER THE CROOKS; COOK THE KIDS
NOW THAT our state legislators have decided in their infinite greed and
myopia that public schools cannot open until after Labor Day, we're in session
until roughly two weeks before July 4. On three mornings during the last week
of school, the temperature in my room at Patrick Henry High School was nearly
90 degrees when I opened the door at 7:45. Students cannot learn under these
conditions; they are either too listless or too irritable.
If schools must be in late session because of asinine legislation, we need
to get our priorities straight and air-condition the schools. The city jail is
air-conditioned. Should we pamper prisoners and cook kids?
