SAFER AT THE RACES THAN ON THE STREETS

THIS LETTER is in response to the June 15 letter ("Boxing matches at the racetrack") on the Franklin County Speedway.

Nowadays, everywhere you go there are drunks who annoy people. At the Franklin County Speedway, you do at least have protection from the security guards. That shows they care that some drunks are dangerous to all people.

My family and I go out there every Saturday night and I have yet to see someone maimed or taken away dead because of a drunk, as you do on the streets and in the bars around the Roanoke area.

If all Whitey Taylor wants is money, why does he provide security guards that come running at the slightest sign of trouble? Security guards aren't free!

Would you rather have your family at a place where prayers are said and where the flag is honored, of which there are very few these days? Or would you rather have family members on the streets, knowing they may never come home again because of a drunken driver? Stop and think of the hundreds of people who go out to Franklin County for the races. How many are trouble drunks? How many are children and teen-agers? What would happen if there were no places like the Franklin County Speedway for a family to enjoy together? Where would you like your family to be - somewhere you know there is protection or somewhere there isn't?
