RADFORD CREW JOINS BOYS STATE AT LIBERTY

Character, leadership, scholastic record, intelligence and loyalty as an American citizen were the criteria used by the RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL administration, counselors and teachers to select five outstanding students for the 51ST AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE OF VIRGINIA, which took place last week at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Brent Brown, Andrew Cosgwell, Scott Johnston, Cameron Mitchell and Casey Underwood, all rising seniors, participated in the exercises of running a pseudo-state.

The 765 boys attending were divided into 12 political entities or cities, each with its own elected officials and representatives.

Patterned after the laws and procedures of the Commonwealth, the exercises provided an opportunity for the students to express their ideas, conduct campaigns and political conventions and establish platforms and agendas.

This year's sponsors are Inland Motors, Lynchburg Foundry, New River Industries, Radford Lions Club and Seaver-Sanders Funeral Home.

The CHRISTIANSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL ADVANCED BAND received a superior rating and won the middle-school division concert championship at the "1993 Music in the Park Festival" in Williamsburg.

It was the only middle-school band to receive a superior rating at this festival.

At BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL, the band was honored as a Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association Honor Band for 1992-93, the highest honor bestowed on a high school band in Virginia.

History teacher KAREN COSTON will attend a monthlong graduate course in constitutional history at American University as part of the James Madison fellowship program.

She also has been selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of Advanced Placement Examinations in government and politics.

Students WARREN LEE and TONY CHEN have been chosen to attend an eight-week summer research program in agricultural biotechnology and cell biology at Virginia Tech.

They will be examining techniques in electron microscopy, gene product characterization and DNA isolation.

Jonathan Tze placed first in student congress at the NATIONAL TOURNAMENT OF THE CATHOLIC FORENSICS LEAGUE in Boca Raton, Fla. Frank Schwartz and John Schwartz tied for 13th place in the duo interpretation.

Dennis Price was in the top 48 out of 240 participants in dramatic interpretation.

Other students who competed in Boca Raton were Jenny Scheutz, Jaime Clemmer, Adam Jortner, Michael Shumsky, Njambi Good, Eric Brown, Aaron Mullins, Fred Speers, Rasna Sarao, Carla Craven, Margo Hasselman, Lisa Reid, Michael Johnson and Geoff Murphy.

\ CAROLYN McCAIN, teacher at Dublin Middle School, has received a Sci-Mat Fellowship for independent study in the humanities.

The award includes a $3,500 grant for six weeks of study on a topic of her choice and $300 to purchase books and materials for the school library.

McCain's study topic is "Local Plants Used in Early American Herbal Remedies: Medicines and Poisons."

The VOCATIONAL BOOSTERS CLUB of Blacksburg High School has chosen a winner of its logo and motto contests. Jason Scott, a sophomore, submitted the winning logo.

Bo Patrick, also a sophomore, created the new motto, "Helping Today Those Who Help Us Tomorrow."

The Vocational Boosters Club is a new club to promote and help the vocational departments.

Businesses and individuals who wish to be inactive members may support the organization with a $2 membership fee for individuals, $5 for professional membership and $10 for a family membership.

President Clinton issued a letter of congratulations to winners of the 1993 PRESIDENTIAL ACADEMIC FITNESS AWARDS.

Sixty-three gold certificates and three silver certificates were awarded to Blacksburg Middle High school pupils.

The eighth grade at Christiansburg Middle School boasted 47 award recipients and four who were given extraordinary-effort awards.

The Virginia Commission for the Arts has announced an Oct. 15 deadline for the 1993-94 TEACHER INCENTIVE GRANT PROGRAM applications.

The program provides financial assistance of up to $300 to elementary or secondary teachers for innovative arts resources or programming for the classroom, to hire arts consultants for professional artists for class art activities or to purchase supplies for a special art project.

More than half of the athletes at BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL maintained a 3.0 or better grade-point average during the fifth six-weeks grading period.

Twenty-three of the athletes were seniors, 43 were juniors, 47 were from the 10th grade, and an even 50 athletes were in the ninth grade.
