LANDMARK JOINS ELECTRONIC-AD VENTURE

Landmark Communications Inc., the Norfolk-based media conglomerate, said Monday it has signed a letter of intent to join Cox Enterprises Inc. and BellSouth Corp. in an electronic-advertising venture across the Southeast.

Landmark's News & Record newspaper in Greensboro, N.C., will be the vehicle for the company's participation in the joint venture, which will provide classified and Yellow Pages advertising through phone and cable-TV lines.

Cox's Atlanta newspapers and BellSouth kicked off the partnership 10 days ago with an agreement to provide information services over the 511 number. At the time, Cox and BellSouth said they would work with other information providers such as Landmark to expand the electronic-advertising venture.

Special "screenphone" technologies eventually may be used, Landmark said.
