WILDER STUMPS FOR TRADE

Expansion of trade between the United States and the nations of Central America would be mutually beneficial, Gov. Douglas Wilder said Monday.

Enhanced trade and investment "stimulates economic growth by fostering better-paying jobs, higher productivity and a higher standard of living," Wilder told Central American leaders at a trade conference.

"And make no mistake, the expansion of trade . . . is not a matter of enriching the U.S. at the expense of Central America," Wilder said. "Trade between nations must be a two-way affair. It was been proven time and time again that countries which engage each other in free and fair trade grow considerably faster than those which maintain trade barriers."
