ANHEUSER-BUSCH BUYS STAKE IN TSINGTAO

Anheuser-Busch Cos. continued its international expansion Monday, saying it had bought a 5 percent interest in Tsingtao Brewery Company Ltd., China's largest maker of beer, for $16.4 million.

The acquisition was the first by foreign investors allowed by the Chinese government for shares that will be sold in the national currency on the stock exchange of Hong Kong.

The stake purchase was Anheuser-Busch's fourth venture outside the United States this year, following deals with the leading breweries of Mexico, Italy and Japan.

Tsingtao, based in the northeastern city of Qingdao, exports to more than 30 countries, including the United States, where sales reached 69,000 barrels last year. - The New York Times
