Orr, 18, of Roanoke, represented Virginia in the weekend national finals. She said Tuesday that she went to Mobile, Ala., for two weeks of rehearsal and pageantry with no preconceived notions about the outcome.
"You go down there with the attitude that 49 other girls are just as qualified as you are," she said.
Rebecca Rhea Jones of Georgia was chosen America's Junior Miss in the 36th annual national finals on Saturday. Elisa Ness of Washington state finished second.
Orr's third-place finish entitled her to a $10,000 scholarship. In addition, she won a $500 fitness award for her skill in executing a complicated aerobics routine and a $500 panel-evaluation award for successfully answering questions about herself and about current events.
For the talent competition, Orr performed a ballet medley.
Orr is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School, where she was the salutatorian. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, a senior class officer, editor of the literary magazine and a cheerleader.
She also takes part in church and civic activities, including Students Against Drunk Driving.
Orr is the daughter of Thomas and Carol Orr.
