ROANOKE CITY COUNCIL AT A GLANCE

Electricity contract: Council appropriated $28,511 as the city's share for consultants to negotiate a three-year electric service contract with Appalachian Power Co. Unlike consumers, local governments negotiate electric rates.

Water project contracts: Council awarded three contracts totaling $6.3 million for the expansion of the Carvins Cove water filtration plant and new water lines. The plant operates at capacity on hot days when water use increases.

Federal housing funding: The city will receive $498,000 under a new federal housing program that is designed to provide affordable housing to low- and moderate-income residents, council learned.

Jail and courthouse air conditioning: One of the air-conditioning units for the city jail and courthouse has been repaired and is back in use, council was told. For a month, the jail and courthouse operated on a backup unit.

Library grant: Council accepted a $26,312 grant from the Virginia State Library and Archives to provide an information and referral service at the City Library.
