The volunteer chief will replace the paid chief, Calvin "Cabby" Whitt, as head of a combined paid and volunteer fire company.
Whitt has said he has been told he will become the new fire marshal, in charge of arson investigations, fire-prevention and hazardous-materials coordination, but he won't know for certain until next Wednesday, when City Manager Bob Asbury is expected to announce election results and the marshal's appointment.
The volunteers also will elect other officers at their meeting. Sam Bell, president of Radford Fire & Rescue Inc., said he will present the names to Asbury next Wednesday morning. Under the reorganization, Asbury must approve election results and appoint the marshal. If approved, the volunteer fire chief and the fire marshal will be sworn in next Wednesday at noon at the courthouse.
Bell said Tuesday there are "at least 25 eligible voters" within the volunteer force. The volunteer chief would head a deparment of six paid, full-time "fire engineers" and up to 50 volunteers.
