TRUCK CRASH TIES UP U.S. 220 TRAFFIC

A Roadway Express driver lost control of his tractor-trailer and crashed into a guardrail on southbound U.S. 220 Tuesday morning, causing some morning rush-hour traffic delays.

No one was hurt in the 7:45 a.m. accident, according to Sgt. M.F. Henninger of the Roanoke County Police Department. No charges were filed against the truck driver, whose name police declined to release.

The driver told police he had been slowing down for a vehicle in front of him when his front brakes locked, sending him off the left side of the road and into the rail. He estimated that he'd been traveling 55 mph before the accident.

Officers at the scene estimated total damage to be approximately $45,000. A Roadway Express dispatcher later called that estimate high, and described the accident as "minor" with no damage to the truck's cargo and mere denting of the vehicle.

The accident took place north of Boones Mill near Willow Branch Road, close to the same stretch of highway where a northbound tractor-trailer flipped last week, scattering 756 cases of beer across the road and jamming traffic. "It's always been a treacherous piece of road," said Henninger.
