TECH'S SCHEDULE PLEASES FOSTER

Tennessee, Marquette, Xavier (Ohio) and Texas Christian are among the 1993-94 non-conference opponents on the Virginia Tech men's basketball schedule.

Tech has 13 home games, including matchups with Tennessee and Marquette. Other non-Metro Conference foes traveling to Blacksburg are Coastal Carolina, VMI, UNC Greensboro, West Virginia and Liberty. Tech and Virginia play in Roanoke on March 2.

Tech's non-conference trips are to Xavier, East Tennessee State, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and William and Mary.

Bill Foster, the Hokies' third-year coach, called the non-conference schedule "the best we've had."

When VMI basketball coach Joe Cantafio faced two vacancies on his staff, two of the first names to come to mind were former Keydets star Ramon Williams and North Carolina State restricted-earnings coach Ed Conroy.

Williams was hired in late May, and this week Cantafio got his other target when Conroy agreed to join the VMI staff. Conroy, who played against Williams in college, was a three-year starter at point guard for The Citadel and reached the rank of Cadet Lt. Colonel, the second-highest rank at the school.

"It was a tough decision, because Coach [Les] Robinson has given me a lot of opportunities," said Williams, who played under Robinson at The Citadel and was working for IBM when Robinson hired him to his first staff at N.C. State. "I've got a lot of loyalty to him, but I've always respected Coach Cantafio."

It will be the first full-time basketball position for Conroy, 26, who worked long hours at N.C. State but was limited to a $12,000 salary by NCAA regulations.

Danny Knott, who coaches the boys' junior varsity basketball team at Christiansburg High School, has been appointed head coach of the girls' varsity team at the Group AA school. Knott, who teaches health and physical education at Christiansburg Middle School, succeeds Debbie Rose but will continue to coach the boys' JV team. Rose moved to Kentucky with her husband.
