Tech does not accept student-athletes who do not meet the NCAA's minimum freshman eligibility standards, which include scoring 700 or better on the Scholastic Assessment Test. Jennings, the Group AA player of the year, said Tuesday he scored 760 on his final try.
"I'm ready to go," he said. "I was sweating it out because it was my last go at it. But I had gone to classes to try to help me, and I went in there with a little bit more confidence."
Jennings, believed to be the first Parade All-American to sign with Tech since 1973, is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and had 19 catches for 654 yards and 11 touchdowns for Jefferson Forest's state championship team. He canceled visits to Virginia and Florida State when he signed with Tech in January.
"I want to make an impact," he said.
Lee Shirley of Roanoke shot a 79 to take a one-stroke lead into today's final round of the North & South Junior golf championship in Pinehurst, N.C. Shirley, who recently won the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame women's championship, was at 3-over-par 151 through two rounds on the Pinehurst No. 2 course. Heather Graff of Kennewick, Wash., was at 152 and Rheba Mabie was at 155.
