NEW SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT APPROVED

At its Tuesday night meeting, the Roanoke School Board approved an amended contract for Superintendent-elect E. Wayne Harris, who takes office Thursday. Provisions of the contract include:

An annual salary of $95,000 per year, plus $9,500 at the end of each year which he can take as an annuity or deferred income payable when he leaves the job. The contract calls for the board to help Harris shield that money from taxes by excluding it from his gross income.

It includes that amount, however, when calculating the value of Harris' group life insurance policy and state retirement benefits.

A $450 monthly car allowance, plus mileage and the cost of a car phone. The board will pay the phone bill for all business-related charges.

Moving costs up to $4,000.

Compensation of $365 a day for each day Harris worked in Roanoke prior to Thursday. School Board Chairman Finn Pincus estimated Harris worked "six to eight days" between March 1 and June 30.

Fifteen days of annual vacation leave, plus 12 days of annual sick leave. Harris will be allowed to accumulate up to 180 days of unused sick leave, for which he will be paid $20 a day when he leaves office.

The annual premium cost of a supplemental disability income insurance policy with annual benefits up to $54,000 guaranteed to age 65.

The full annual premium of family comprehensive health and family dental insurance policies.
