MIAMI TO PAY MILLIONS ON POLICE VICTIM'S CARE

In one of the nation's largest out-of-court settlements stemming from an episode of police abuse, the city of Miami has agreed to pay $7.5 million and all the medical bills of a black man whom officers beat and then choked into a coma last year.

Because the accord, approved unanimously by the Miami City Commission late Tuesday, will pay the victim's medical bills for the rest of his life, the settlement could eventually amount to $34 million, depending on how long he survives, his family's lawyer said.
