GILES ADMINISTRATOR QUITS AFTER 4 1/2 YEARS

Giles County Administrator Ken Weaver has resigned to become the city manager of Buena Vista.

Weaver, who has been administrator for 4 1/2 years, announced his decision to the chairman of the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night. Board Chairman Herbert "Hub" Brown announced Weaver's decision at a board meeting Wednesday.

"You have in many, many instances helped us get over humps we might not have otherwise have been able to deal with," said Brown in announcing Weaver's resignation. "We wish you well."

"It was just an opportunity I did not feel I could pass by," Weaver said of the Buena Vista opening. "I'm sorry to leave, but we're leaving on good terms."

Weaver's resignation is effective today. He takes over as city manager in Buena Vista in mid-July.

Clay Goodman, Buena Vista's former city manager, is now town manager of Vinton.

Weaver's departure comes amid widespread talk that some board members have been unhappy with his performance of late.

"Yes sir, there's been some talk, I won't deny that," Supervisor Larry Jay Williams told a reporter.

But several board members refused to talk on the record about Weaver's job performance.

Weaver was given one month's severance pay, in addition to other benefits.

Weaver said the money was to compensate him for the help he will continue to give the board as it searches for his replacement.

"You might take that to indicate the way the board felt toward the man," Brown said of the severance pay. "I think Mr. Weaver has done a great job for the county."

Brown said Weaver had been instrumental in helping the county receive funds over the years it might not otherwise have gotten.

Weaver cited the good fiscal shape of the county and its industrial park as accomplishments of his tenure.

The former McDowell County, West Va., economic development director said he is looking forward to working on Buena Vista's flood wall project.
