IN SCHOOL

NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE students and staff members were honored recently at the college's Coronation Ball.

Those recognized included: Thomas Weeks and Lisa Rembisz, crowned Mr. and Mrs. National Business College; Lenora Shively Downing, presented with the Summit Award for academic and professional achievements; Karen Wright Ellis, medical assisting department head, and James Williams, an accounting instructor, named outstanding faculty members; Marianne Repko, a financial assistance counselor and student services representative, given a distinguished staff member plaque; Judy Steelman, career center director, given the Student Government Association's Appreciation Award.

The awards were voted on by the student body.

The 1993-94 Student Government Association officers also were announced. They are: Kenneth Johnson, president; James Jenkins, vice president; and Nicole Turner, reporter. JoAnn Azim, Paul Beverage and Lisa Crigger will serve on the student advisory board.

\ JEFFREY CHANEY and REBECCA MOORE received the Mary Terry Goodwin Kuyk Volunteer Scholarship from the Junior League of Roanoke Valley.

Chaney, a 1993 graduate of Salem High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. James Chaney, plans to attend Ferrum College.

Moore, a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Moore, will attend Campbell College.

\ CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL recently honored students who together have given more than 1,500 hours of service this year to medical facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and rescue squads in the Roanoke Valley.

Receiving certificates of recognition were Jason Bialek, Alisa Blais, Catie Bolton, Diane Bush, Kerry Byrne, Warren Devan, Tina Dooley, Allison Ellis, Jeff Grasty, Alan Hash, Holly Hurt, Lori Jamison, Ken Jones, Tara Joyce, Brandon King, Norell Lee, Karen Likens, Sally Lockard, Alex Min, Garrett Min, Debra Masters, Mary Ann Meador, Rebecca Mitchell, Tara McClellan, Rupa Patel, Jodie Schwarz, Kevin Smith, and David Younger.

\ MARY LOU'S FITNESS CLUB, one of nine Education First programs sponsored by Hills department stores, recently awarded gold medals to 22 students from two Roanoke Valley schools.

Students from Fairview Elementary were: Matthew Blevins, Brandon Bodine, James Hannah, Darell Hodnett, Vincent Pinkney, Matthew Potts, Orren Prunty, Kevin Saunders, Norman Short, Ronald Taylor, Ross Scott, Crystal Barnett, Tanya Caldwell, Timica Campbell, Guinevera Jordan, Adrian Leftwich, Audrey Weikel.

Students from Oak Grove Elementary were: Kyle Singleton, Kerri Zeigler, Amanda Pettyman, Debra Crites, Animesh Jain.

Participating students promised to eat one extra serving of fruits and vegetables per week and exercise one day each week instead of watching television. The program lasted for five months.
