AIRMAN 1ST CLASS ERIC D. NICHOLS, son of Christine L. Jones of Roanoke and Jeffrey M. Nichols of Lincolnton, N.C., has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS RUSSELL A. COLBERT, son of Robert E. and Thelma B. DeHaven of 2118 Memorial Ave. S.W., recently left for the Mediterranean for six months aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in Norfolk.

Colbert is a 1989 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ SEAMAN ROY D. DeCOSTER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Covell of 3633 Colonial Ave. S.W., was awarded the USO Award during recruit graduation ceremonies at Great Lakes Naval Training Command, Chicago.

The award is given to the graduating recruit whose enthusiasm, supportive attitude and willingness to help others during training exceeds Navy training standards. DeCoster is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS CHARLES E. STRAUB, son of Gail D. Straub of 2848 Longview Ave., has returned from a three-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas aboard the combat store ship USS Sylvania, based in Norfolk.

Straub is a 1985 graduate of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg.

\ SPEC. GREGORY D. HODGES, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold V. Cogdill of 550 Fidelity Road, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

He took advanced training as an aviation-aero scout observer at Fort Rucker, Ala. While at Fort Rucker, he completed a school for air assault training. He is serving a 12-month tour in Korea.

Hodges is a 1986 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and a 1992 graduate of Emory & Henry College.

\ PVT. JONATHAN E. FENTRESS, son of Gloria Brandt and stepson of Steven C. Brandt of 5256 Eden Ave. and Steven P. Fentress of Powells Point, has completed basic training at Fort Leonard E. Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Fentress is a 1992 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ JEAN SHELOR of Salem has joined the Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation as a field representative.

Shelor joins worldwide representatives in search of servicewomen to ensure their service will be recognized and honored in the Women in Military Service Memorial.

\ MARINE SGT. WAYNE R. JONES, son of David R. and Janet C. Jones of 3833 Bower Road S.W., has received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

Jones, a 1986 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is on assigment at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Santa Ana, Calif.

\ ARMY PFC. SHAWN C. LINKOUS, son of Sharon B. and M. Lee Linkous of 5459 Eveningwood Lane, has been sent to Somalia in support of Operation Restore Hope.

Linkous, a driver with the 22nd Infantry at Fort Drum, N.Y., is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School.

\ MELISSA D. MURRAY of Roanoke and DEXTER A. BRADBURY of Vinton have been promoted to staff sergeant with the 29th Infantry Division Band of the Virginia Army National Guard in Roanoke.

Murray works in the Roanoke Police Department. Bradbury works for Webb's Motors of Roanoke.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT CHRISTOPHER T. WADE, son of Dathea H. Wade of 1420 Grayson Ave. N.W., has Wade completed training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Wade is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JONATHAN D. BOOTH, son of Brenda L. McDaniel of 2668 Stanford Drive, Salem, has reported for duty at Naval Security Group Activity, Fort Meade, Md.

Booth is a 1991 graduate of Glenvar High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN DEMURA ST. WILLIAMS, son of Patricia A. Williams of 1715 Dunbar St. N.W., has reported for duty aboard the tank landing ship USS Spartanburg County stationed in Little Creek, Va.

St. Williams is a graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ MARINE CPL. TIMOTHY A. ANDERSON, son of Enid B. Anderson of 100 Kimball Ave., Salem, has received a Certificate of Commendation.

Anderson was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with Brigade Service Support Group Five, 1st Force Service Support Group, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Anderson is a 1991 graduate of Salem High School.

\ MARINE PVT. JASON S. POFF, son of Ivan T. and Grace B. Poff of 3339 Kingswood Drive S.W., has completed training with Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Poff is a 1992 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ COAST GUARD SEAMAN JONATHAN E. POWERS, son of Alan L. and Barbara A. Powers of 2302 Mount Pleasant Blvd. S.E., has been awarded the Coast Guard Humanitarian Service Medal while serving at Coast Guard Group, 7th Coast Guard District, Key West, Fla.

Powers, who received the award for extraordinary service, is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT MICHAEL J. McSHERRY, son of Thomas O. and Margaret McSherry of 718 Mason Road, Vinton, has completed training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

McSherry is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ SECOND LT. BRIAN T. SNIDER, son of Dewey L. and Barbara B. Snider of Cloverdale, has received silver wings after graduation from pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Lubbock, Texas.

Snider is a 1987 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School and a 1991 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
