EXHIBIT TO HONOR VINTON VETERANS

The Vinton Historical Society is planning a special exhibit honoring Vinton citizens who served in the military during World War II and needs help collecting mementos and photos to be shown.

The exhibit, part of the town's 50th-anniversary remembrance of the war, also will serve as a tribute to all Roanoke Valley service members who served in any war, and to those who lost their lives doing so.

Three Vinton servicemen to be honored in the exhibit are Air Force Lt. Col. Dan Darnell, currently the commander and flight leader of the Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron; Maj. Jimmy Brooks, a fighter pilot in Europe during World War II and jet fighter pilot during the Korean War; and Air Force Brig. Gen. Joe Thomas, who was killed when his plane was shot down over North Africa during World War II's early years.

Items on these or other service members may be taken to the museum at Maple Street and Jackson Avenue on Thursdays or Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Or call 344-4689 for more information. All items will be returned after the show closes.
