Program helps families of impaired older adults

The Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley is offering a Family Focus Forum, a free monthly program for families of impaired older adults.

The next meeting will be July 14 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the center's Veteran's Affairs Medical Center branch.

The forum will examine topics such as health care, legislation, therapies, social support and home care management.

Golden Rule Award winners announced

Two individuals, an organization and a business/school partnership have received Golden Rule Awards from J.C. Penney for their service to the community.

Karen Ramsey, a volunteer at the West End Center, won the individual award, and Stephanie Scanlin, a volunteer at the Mill Mountain Zoo, won the youth award.

Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley won the group award. Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. and Hurt Park Elementary School won the education award.

Winners received $1,000 contributions to their service-related organizations.

Four finalists received certificates of merit for volunteer work and $250 grants for their service organizations. They are: Friends of the Library for work at the Achievement Center, Emerson Gilmer for work with the the Community Awareness Council of Salem, Wanda Morehead for work with the Longshop-McCoy Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization.

The Roanoke Valley award winners are now eligible to compete for national awards.
