CLINTON GETS WEAKENED JOBS MEASURE

Vacation-bound lawmakers sent President Clinton the shrunken remnants of his jobs bill Thursday, 10 weeks after Senate Republicans killed what once was one of his chief economic priorities.

The House approved the measure by a mostly party-line 280-138 vote as lawmakers rushed through a final day before their 11-day break. The Senate then sent the measure to Clinton by voice.

The bill contained about $1 billion for summer jobs, small-business loans and other programs Clinton sought earlier this year in hopes of quickly boosting the economy. It was a dwarf compared to the nearly $20 billion in Clinton's original package, which died in April.
