FORMER TECH PLAYER NEW VCU WOMEN'S AIDE

Missy Sallade, a former Virginia Tech women's basketball player, has been promoted from graduate assistant to full-time assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth.

Sallade has spent the past 2 1/2 seasons as a graduate assistant to another former Hokies standout, Susan Walvius.

Barbara Jacobs, who resigned recently as head coach at Syracuse, also has been hired as a full-time assistant for the Rams.

"We're getting the best of both worlds," Walvius said. "Barb Jacobs brings a wealth of Division I experience from her days at Syracuse. Meanwhile, Missy offers great enthusiasm and a working knowledge of the system here at VCU."

\ Gary Wiggins went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs to power visiting Roanoke Post 3 North to a 19-3 rout of Rocky Mount on Wednesday night in American Legion baseball.

Wiggins had a double and a homer for North (7-0), which also got three RBI each from Chris Carr and Shannon Gray. Riley Hodges went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for Rocky Mount (1-5).

Brian Hawkins (2-0) struck out six en route to the victory.
