ROANOKE COLLEGE HONORS 5 ALUMNI

Five Roanoke College alumni have been awarded the College Medal, the highest honor the college bestows on its alumni.

Medals were awarded to Norwood C. "Woody" Middleton of Salem; Roy R. Pollard Jr. of Roanoke; William E. Keister of Strasburg; Mary E. Stanley "Sunnie" Bates of Atlanta; and David F. Thornton of Boston.

The medal recognizes outstanding alumni who represent the ideals of responsible leadership, intellectual integrity and good citizenship through their professional accomplishments and service to their community and alma mater.

Middleton is former managing editor and assistant to the president of the Roanoke Times & World-News. Author of "Salem: A Virginia Chronicle," Middleton served as president of the Salem Kiwanis, Blue Ridge Boy Scout Council, Virginia Press Association and the Salem Historical Society.

Pollard is president and chief executive officer of Save-X Inc. He serves on the college's Community Advisory Board and has worked on the national committee for the college's 1992 Plan.

Keister has been publisher of the Northern Virginia Daily since 1972. A member of the Roanoke College Associates, he has received awards for distinguished service in publishing.

Bates is the first executive director for Planned Parenthood in Atlanta. She worked as a newscaster and producer for television stations in Schenectady, N.Y., and Pittsburgh.

Thornton, a former Virginia state senator, is director of planned giving for the Harvard Law School. He has been a member of the Roanoke College board of trustees since 1976.

He is former editor/publisher of the Salem Times Register and past president of the Salem Chamber of Commerce.
