NAACP CHIEF MAY SEEK SEAT

The campaign for the Roanoke City Council election next spring is beginning early.

The Rev. Charles Green, president of the Roanoke chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said Thursday he may run for council.

"I'm considering running and I will make a decision after the November election," Green said.

Green has criticized council on several issues in recent months and has been a leader in the protest over plans to realign and widen Wells Avenue in the Gainsboro neighborhood.

"As you know, I have been dissatisfied with council," he said. "Many people have encouraged me to run.'

Green, who has long been active in the Democratic Party, is supporting Marsha Fielder in her campaign for commissioner of revenue.

Fielder, a Democrat, is running against Councilman Howard Musser, a Democrat who is making an independent bid for the post.

Green said some Democratic leaders appear to be providing only lukewarm support for Fielder. Most party leaders supported David Anderson, deputy city treasurer, for the nomination.

If party leaders don't strongly support Fielder, Green said, he will be more inclined to run for council.

"If the people who are unopposed don't work for her, I won't support them again," he said.

The three Democrats running unopposed are Sheriff Alvin Hudson, Treasurer Gordon Peters and Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

Three council seats will be up for election next May. They are held by Musser and two other Democrats, James Harvey and William White.

If Musser wins the race for commissioner of revenue, he will have to resign his council seat.

White has said he will seek re-election, but Harvey said he hasn't made a decision.
