OBIT-MCKISSICK, PHYLLIS D.

McKISSICK, Phyllis D., 79, of Washington, D.C., died Monday, June 28, 1993, in a Washington, D.C. hospital. She was born in Natural Bridge, Va. on May 2, 1914, the oldest child of the late George W. and Josephine S. Diamond. She received her early education in the public schools in Natural Bridge. At an early age, she was baptized and fellowshipped into the First Baptist Church of Natural Bridge. She was united in marriage to Roosevelt McKissick in 1931 and God blessed this union with eight children. Upon moving to Washington, D.C., she retained membership in her home church. In keeping with her covenant, in 1986 she joined the Canaan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. under watchful care where the Rev. Cornelius Carter Jr. is the pastor. She was loved and respected by the officers and members of Canaan; however, the Sanctuary Choir was a favorite group, whom she loved dearly and most of them referred to her as "Mama". Mrs. McKissick pursued a career in the Federal Government and worked for thirty five years, retiring in 1975. She received many awards for faithful and dedicated service. She enjoyed her retirement by traveling and being in the comfort of her children. Mourning her passing is her husband, Roosevelt McKissick, Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Constance Roberts, Shirley Moore, Theresa McKissick and Renee Parker, all of Washington, D.C., Maxine Henderson, Huntington, W.Va. and Patricia West, Newark, N.J.; two sons, George McKissick, Durham, N.C. and Howland McKissick, Washington, D.C.; 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mary Scott, Virginia Diamond and Janie Elliott, all of Natural Bridge, Emily Lowery and Faye Harris, both of Richmond; one brother, Samuel Diamond, Natural Bridge and a host of nieces, nephews, and very close friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Natural Bridge with the Rev. Levin B. West and the Rev. Jasper Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Diamond Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, Natural Bridge. Lomax Funeral Home, Buena Vista, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
