THE TIPOFF

BIG BANG: Music for Americans, the free Independence Day celebration sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News, will be Saturday night at 8 at Victory Stadium in Roanoke.

It will feature the Roanoke Youth Symphony, the Music for Americans Community Chorus and Josh Kaufmann, a five-time winner on the ``Star Search'' television program. Stan Kingma will be master of ceremonies, and a big fireworks display will conclude the show.

Admission is free, and shuttles will be available. The musical portion of the program will run about 90 minutes, with the explosions to follow. See Extra 3 for details.

FAIR CONDITIONS: The Salem Fair opens this afternoon at 5 and continues through July 11 with an array of rides, food stalls, musical entertainers and divers other attractions, including the always-popular Robinson's Racing Pigs.

The fair will open at noon Saturday through Monday, at 4 on July 6-8 and again at noon July 9-11. Fireworks displays will begin at 10 tonight through Sunday night. All of this takes place on the grounds of the Salem Civic Center.

the U.S. Space Camp Exposition, today-Monday, noon-11 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday, 4-11 p.m .

Lumberjack Show, 3, 6:30 and 9 p.m. today-Monday; 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m., Tuesday- Thursday.

Entertainment stage, nightly music from Festus Gunslinger, The True, Bananas at Large, Just Another Band, Wampus Hawgs and others.

K92 Summer Blast '93, Sunday, 1 p.m., with Aaron Neville, Boy Krazy, Wendy Moten, Michael Damian and others.

Parking is free, admission is free, and the rides and games are not. What'd you expect?

NOT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL: But it's a nice one just the same. It's The Bowl at Lime Kiln Arts in Lexington, a cozy, down-to-earth environment for the annual concert of the Robin and Linda Williams Band. It will be Sunday night at 8. Tickets are $11 and $13. The couple, and their sidemen, are known for acoustic- country music, pleasing harmonies and hot picking, broadcast nationally on Garrison Keillor's radio show and on other programs, as well.

PENULTIMATE EVENT: If they stick to their guns, this will be the next-to-last time the Statler Brothers will present their annual ``Happy Birthday USA'' celebration in their hometown of Staunton.

It's set for Sunday and Monday at Gypsy Hill Park. The musical entertainment will start Sunday afternoon at 1 and continue till after 10 that night.

On Monday, a distance race and other activities will begin at 7:30 in the morning, and the music kicks off around noon. It all leads up to the free Statler Brothers show at 8:30. They'll be accompanied by Janie Fricke and Rex Allen Jr., and followed by a flag ceremony and fireworks display.

Needless to say, a huge crowd - 80,000 to 90,000 people -is expected. Visitors are advised to arrive early at the stadium in the park, set up their lawn chairs and then make a day of all the surrounding hoopla. The stadium will be policed, so your chairs should be safe.

MOZART AND MILK COWS: You can have it all this weekend at Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of President James Monroe, up Charlottesville way.

Saturday and Sunday will be Plantation Days, with crafts of all kinds, cow-milking and butter-making demonstrations and presentations on slave life and early dentistry, plus the telling of some African-American tales. At 1:30 in the afternoon, ``Dancing with Horses II,'' a theatrical performance, will begin in the horse paddock.

Plantation Days tickets cost $7 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and $3 for children under 12. The tickets will be available at the door.

Saturday night at 7, you can take in an English-language version of Mozart's opera, ``Don Giovanni.'' Tickets are $16, $15 and $12. The box office number is (804) 293-4500.

JAZZ, MAN: The Henry Street Music Center in Roanoke will present J. Plunky Branch and Oneness, a jazz group, Saturday night and into Sunday morning at the center at 110 First Street in Northwest Roanoke.

The show starts at 9 o'clock. Tickets are $12.50, available from Books, Strings & Things and V Magazine.

The center is a community performing arts place with an emphasis on jazz. It's available for meetings and special events, as well.

STRINGS, MAN: The Garth Newel Music Center in Bath County opens its concert season Saturday with a 4 o'clock performance of one of the string quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn, the Quartet in G Major, K. 387. Two other pieces will complete the program.

On Sunday afternoon, American music from Irving Berlin, Scott Joplin and others, including patriotic composers, will be presented at 3 o'clock.
